A PERFORMANCE FROM LUTHER FULLER, BLIND PIANIST [2019]
A piece for the University Daily Kansan as part of their 2019 Day in the Life special issue, published alongside gorgeous photos by Emma Pravacek and a wonderful story by Nicole-Marie Konopelko. Luther comes across as the reluctant-to-brag type (his quiet "thank you" at the end is my favorite part), so I made it my goal to do it for him in my own way.
With the busy student audience in mind, I sequenced the project to quickly establish Luther and his talent, explain his story, and fit in a brief but excellent performance from him. My only regret is that I didn't create a longer edit.
Luther helped me realize how much I enjoy interviewing people on why they love what they do. Of all the things I use the video medium to communicate, enthusiasm like his is the easiest to turn out an engaging piece with. It also gave me great practice for soloing multi-cam shoots, and revealed to me that my shotgun mic needed some re-calibrating.
